A very Happy New Year to all! I wish the best for everyone in this coming year.
I received such a huge honor the other day. I found out I was Time magazine’s “Person of the Year”! How wonderful to receive such acknowledgement. Congratulations to all of you readers for also being Time’s “Person of the Year”. I loved looking in that little mirror on the cover of the magazine and seeing my own reflection. The honor hopefully means we all have contributed our best to society.
I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas. The ritual of settling in to the winter months is now with us. Trinity church was “un-decorated” this morning. The trees and lights have been packed away in my house. Everything seems so bare. January, February and March seem to loom ahead for me. I know the days are getting longer and the seed catalogs will soon be in our post office box so I must stop feeling sorry for myself and look forward to these next 3 months. We, as a community have enough to do with getting ready for our celebration next summer. There need not be a dull moment. My mandate to myself is to quit whining and get busy---especially with pictures for our heritage DVD.
As with the rest of the country our weather has been as unusual as it possibly could be. I think I need to ban any travel by our 2 sons and their families from Kansas to Edinburg during the winter months. Our son Mike and family had icy roads on the way up and snow, snow, snow on the way back to Kansas City. Our son Dave and family have also experienced blizzard conditions and ice almost every time they come to visit. The worst always seems to be around Watertown, SD. We have had record breaking temperatures the last few days with highs in the 40’s. The 6 inches of snow we received around the 1st quickly is sinking in to the ground. Winter isn’t over yet so we could still have plenty of cold weather and snow.
I mentioned in the Crow’s Nest earlier that our grocery store, J & J Superette, was for sale. Fortunately, it was bought so Edinburg will not be without a place to purchase groceries. Greg & Ruth Hall, Fred & Dorothy Hall and TJ & Katie Hall bought it. They have renamed it “MARKET ON MAIN”. It is open for business even as they do some interior remodeling. Jarrod Ellingson will continue to cut meat – he does such a wonderful job of having many different meats and cuts available. Jessica Ellingson and Suzie Kartes are helping with the transition to new ownership which makes that easier. We were so fortunate to have the Ellingson’s purchase the store when it was for sale a few years ago. The grocery store is such a vital part of keeping our little towns alive in all the rural communities. We are so thankful ours will stay open. It is great to drive uptown and see cars parked on Main Street. Thank you Greg, Ruth, Fred, Dorothy, TJ and Katie for “Market on Main”.
Congratulations to Neil and Melanie (Nordquist) Bernhoft on the birth of their daughter, Madison Dawn. Madison was born prematurely, but Grandma Loretta today said she weighed in at 7 lbs and is doing great! There is nothing more precious than a new baby to love.
A very special “Happy Birthday” to sister-in-law Loretta. This is big one! Your membership to the senior citizen’s of America is in the mail. With age comes wisdom and contentment---who could ask for anything more. The “60’s” are great.
